Now is the time to assess your lawn. It will probably be two or three weeks before the ground temperature reaches 5 degrees which is ideal for starting you early lawn treatment. But that does not mean that you can sit idlily by! Now is the time to assess what is the best treatment for your lawn as soon as the ground temperature picks up.
Many people ask me how do I know when the temperature is 5 degrees? It’s a good question which conjures up the mental picture of the lawn enthusiast going around with a thermometer and poking it in the ground like a nurse checking a patient’s temperature when they are running a fever. The good news is that you don’t have to do that! All you need to do is to watch the grass and when it spurts into growth then you know that the conditions are just right.
I usually find there are three different conditions which each need a different type of treatment if you want to give your turf the revitalisation it needs.
The first is if the lawn has an infection of moss and this last winter with its warm wet weather has been ideal for that. If it is it needs a dressing of MO Bacter which will destroy the moss and feed your lawn for three months. What is more it contains natural occurring micro-organisms which eats the dead moss so you don’t have to rake it out.
The Second condition is a tired and scraggy looking lawn in clear need of a pick me up. These lawns need Recovery which contains a special formula called Humifirst. Humifirst boosts the reproduction of micro-organisms in the soil and invigorates the growth of grass roots. This in turn produces a healthy and vibrant grass plant. You might think this is a long process and Recovery does feed the lawn for 12 weeks but is results are almost immediately evident.
The third condition is one where the lawn is OK and just needs a feed to set it up and keep it going. In this case Universal Lawnfeed is just the job. Like all three fertilisers it is organic based and again feeds your lawn for three months.
Being organic based means that they contain no chemicals and are good for the environment. They are safe for children and pets and will not harm your plants and shrubs if you over spread onto the flower beds.
So why not take a good look at your lawn and see if you can make it as comfortable as velvet this year.
